How they work together: one inverter trip
- SCADA records the inverter fault alarm and the time it tripped.
- The monitoring layer (CMS) sees output drop to zero, calculates the energy being lost and raises a prioritised alert.
- The CMMS turns the alert into a work order with an owner, steps and a due date, and records parts used.
- Back in the CMS, recovered generation confirms the fix, and the event appears in the daily report and loss analysis.
Without the connection between steps 2 and 3, alarms pile up in one tool while work is tracked in a spreadsheet, and nobody can say which lost megawatt-hours were dealt with.
Which do you need?
- One or two sites, in-house team: SCADA plus a simple CMS may be enough to start.
- A growing portfolio across OEMs: a CMS becomes essential to compare sites on a consistent basis.
- Contractors and many field teams: a CMMS is what makes work accountable and auditable.
- Most portfolios over a few hundred MW: CMS and CMMS on one platform, connected to the SCADA you already have.
Questions to ask vendors
- How do you get data from our SCADA, data loggers and OEM portals, and who needs to grant access?
- How is the asset hierarchy (plant, block, inverter, string) modelled, and can we import our asset register?
- Which KPIs are calculated, and can we see and change the formulas?
- How does an alarm become a work order? Is that automatic or manual?
- Can field teams work offline and attach photos and readings?
- What is logged for audit, and who can approve skipped preventive maintenance?
- How are user roles and permissions handled for contractors and investors?
- What does implementation involve, and who does the integration work?
Where nxtGrid fits
- Core is the CMS: portfolio and plant monitoring, analytics, alerts and reports
- Pro adds the CMMS: preventive and corrective maintenance, work orders, tickets, approvals and a field app
- Works alongside your existing SCADA and data loggers rather than replacing them
